The City of Summit Recycling Advisory Committee (RAC) is responsible for assisting the city with its municipal recycling efforts to reach the goal of reducing the waste stream by 50%.
RAC advises Common Council on recycling policies, and works to expand public awareness of recycling efforts in Summit.

Food waste composting program at the Municipal Transfer Station
The program offers residents with a disposal permit the option of bringing food scraps and other perishable items to the Transfer Station. Green Bucket Compost collects the food waste once a week, and then the material is converted into renewable energy at a food waste recycling plant. The six-month pilot program began in June 2022 and was made permanent in January 2023.
Bring your unwanted reusable bags to the collection bin at the Transfer Station, next to the Book Barn. More information on this county program is available here.
Textile Recycling Bins
A wide variety of clothing and textiles are accepted at the new Helpsy bins at the Transfer Station, near the Book Barn. More information on this county program is available here. A list of accepted items is available here.

Partnership with BookSmiles
RAC has partnered with New Jersey non-profit BookSmiles to divert excess books from the Book Barn from entering the waste stream. DPW staff store boxes of excess books at the Transfer Station in between BookSmiles pickups. Click here to view more information.
