Our office protects against the impacts of natural and man-made emergencies and disaster on people, property, environment and economy in Summit through mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery efforts.

Emergency Alerts and non-Emergency Notifications


SMART911
Smart911 provides emergency information by telephone, text, fax, and email about city-wide, high-priority events. The City of Summit strongly encourages all residents and business owners to create a Smart911 profile. In addition to your contact information, you can also add additional details which will help emergency services to respond more effectively, such as residence floor plans and medical information for family members with intellectual, mental health, or physical disabilities. Watch sign-up instructional video here.

Nixle Alerts
The Summit Police Department issues Nixle alerts providing important, event-related information via email and text message, as well as through the Everbridge website.

City Website Notifications
Subscribe to receive general notifications by email and text from the city website, including information on agency activities and city services.

Social Media
The City of Summit utilizes Facebook and Twitter to keep residents informed about events and on-going items of interest. During an emergency, both Facebook and Twitter will be utilized to communicate as well.

County Notifications

Union County First Alert
Union County helps keep residents informed about county-wide emergency events and update through its Union County First Alert service.

General Storm Safety Tips


Gather: Water, chargers, medication, first aid kit, flashlights (extra batteries), non-perishable food. This is in case you lost electricity and/or water.

Bring inside: lightweight furniture, garbage cans, plants, pillows. Anything that could get picked up in strong winds.

NEVER go near downed power lines or downed trees. Call your power company if you see a downed line or use their online system to report it.

Emergency Relief for Union County Residents

Summit residents who are adversely affected by storms can apply for FEMA’s “Individuals and Households Program” at www.DisasterAssistance.gov. You can also apply over the phone at 800-621-3362.

FEMA can help residents with housing assistance, medical expenses, childcare expenses, transportation expenses, and other costs related to losses from disasters.

Emergency Management Plan

The City of Summit has developed an action plan to protect local citizens and property in the event of a natural disaster or emergency. It is an all-hazard plan and covers many emergencies, such as hurricanes and snow storms, and encompasses many similar situations but is also directed by the specific emergency at hand.
