At the Common Council meeting on September 17, there will be a presentation by the founders of a new civic group, the Empowering Kids Organization. There will be two ceremonial proclamations issued by Mayor Nora Radest. The first proclamation is for Constitution Week and the other is for Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad month in September. There is one ordinance for a vote on changing the salary for the City Treasurer/CFO position and creating a new program aide position within the Department of Community Programs. There is also one ordinance for introduction on the prohibition of retail sale of dogs and cats from puppy mills and kitten factories. There will be a number of resolutions, including authorizing the purchase of a new senior bus, acceptance of a donation toward the cost of a new senior bus, submission of a grant application for funding cooking classes for people with special needs, the submission of a grant application for diversity programs, expansion of a liquor license to the rooftop area at the Elks Club, increase in a consulting budget for certain emergency work, approval of a change order for paving work, minor changes to the city’s community forestry plan, and approval of sewer inspections using cameras.

Presentations

There will be a presentation by the three founders of a new volunteer group called Empowering Kids Organization (EKO).  EKO’s mission is educational and cultural.  As described by EKO, they are “working on identifying new strategies and programs to increase academic achievement, implement effective leadership opportunities, help assist English learning, reinforce critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and expand life experiences and cultural awareness.”  In addition, EKO “presents our students with new ways to see the world and help them to find their own voice by exercising their creative expression.”

There will also be two ceremonial award presentations. The first is to the Daughters of the American Revolution for Constitution Week, and the other to the First Aid Squad for Summit First Aid Squad month in September.

 

Ordinances

There will be one ordinance for consideration and voting regarding the City Treasurer/CFO position and creating a new program aide position within the Department of Community Programs.  There is also one ordinance for introduction regarding to the prohibition of retail sale of dogs and cats from puppy mills and kitten factories.  The hearing associated with this ordinance will be conducted at the October 2 meeting. 


Resolutions for Consideration

There are a number of resolutions for consideration. There are two resolutions connected with the replacement of the current senior bus. The first is for the purchase of a new bus with handicap capabilities, and the other is on the acceptance of a donation from Senior Connections Inc. toward the cost of a new senior bus. There are few resolutions related to grant applications, including an application made with the Summit Junior League for the funding of cooking classes for people with special needs, a grant application to the Summit Area Public Foundation to help cover costs of certain diversity programs run by the Department of Community Programs. There is resolution authorizing the expansion of a liquor license to the rooftop bar area at the Elks Club.  Finally, there is a resolution to increase the consulting budget for certain emergency work, approval of a change order for paving work, minor changes to the city’s community forestry plan, and approval of sewer inspections using cameras.


 Next Council Meeting: The next meeting will be on October 2 at 7:30PM.
