[ARCHIVED] Health Officials Warn About Potential Measles Outbreak

Health alert

The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) has been made aware of a confirmed case of measles in a traveler returning to the U.S. from Israel. The international traveler was diagnosed with measles and potentially exposed people in various New York State venues and one New Jersey location between October 4, 2018 and October 11, 2018. People exposed could develop symptoms as late as November 1.

Anyone who visited the following locations in New York or New Jersey may have been exposed to measles:

• Congregation Bais Elazer, 26 Voyager Court, Monsey, NY on October 4 between 8:00 am and 11:00 am
• Mia's Reflexology, 191 South Main Street, New City, NY on October 4 between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm
• Life Time Athletic Bergen County, 10 Van Riper Road, Montvale, NJ on October 5 between 8:30 am and 12:00 pm
• Wesley Kosher, 455 Route 306, Monsey, NY on October 5 between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm
• Congregation Borov, 2 Parker Road, Monsey, NY on October 5 between 6:45 pm and 9:45 pm or October 6 between 9:00 am and 1:45 pm
• Costco, 50 Overlook Blvd., Nanuet, NY on October 7 between 1:30 pm and 5:00 pm
• Care 365, 1 Main Street, Monsey, NY on October 8 between 10:00 pm and 12:00 am
• Westchester Medical Center Emergency Room, 100 Woods Road, Valhalla, NY on October 11 between 3:45 am and 4:15 pm

Individuals who might have been exposed are urged to contact their healthcare providers to discuss their exposure and risk of developing illness. Anyone who develops symptoms consistent with measles is urged to call their healthcare provider BEFORE going to the medical office or emergency room so that special arrangements can be made to minimize exposure in the healthcare setting.

In light of the increase of measles in Israel and parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, the NJDOH continues to urge providers to remain vigilant for cases of measles (consider measles in persons who present with fever and rash) and would like to remind all healthcare and public health professionals about the importance of receiving up-to-date immunizations, especially prior to international travel.

Measles Overview
Measles is a highly contagious disease that is transmitted by respiratory droplets and airborne spread. Following exposure, approximately 90% of susceptible persons will develop measles. The disease can result in severe complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis. The incubation period for measles ranges from 7 to 21 days. Individuals are infectious 4 days before through 4 days after rash onset. The diagnosis of measles should be considered in any person with a red, blotchy skin rash, fever, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, and sore throat. Immunocompromised patients and patients who are not fully immune may have an atypical presentation.

Residents who are concerned about exposure to measles can contact the health department at 908-789-4070.
