“The Fire Department is organizing local houses of worship in Summit to join communities across the nation to ring bells in unison in tribute to fallen firefighters,” explains Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers. “We are thankful for the religious and spiritual leaders in our community that will participate in a moment of remembrance to honor our brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”
A brief ceremony will be held outside fire headquarters in Summit following the bell ringing on Sunday at 10AM.
For 37 consecutive years, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation memorial weekend has been held in Emmitsburg, Maryland to honor firefighters who have given their lives protecting the communities they serve. A team of five Summit firefighters, Chief Eric Evers, Battalion Chief Paul Imbimbo, Lieutenant Brian Harnois and two retired members Deputy Chief Rick DeGroot and Battalion Chief Joe Wurtzbacher will travel to Emmitsburg before the Sunday ceremony to help organize and plan the event.
