[ARCHIVED] Sewer system blockages linked to flushables and cooking oil.

DCS Logo Newsfeed

The City of Summit has been experiencing blockage issues with its sanitary sewer system caused by the flushing of adult and baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, and improper disposal of cooking oils.

Although these items are often labeled as biodegradable, when flushed, wipes and feminine products can create massive blockages in the sewer system and potentially cause problems for homeowners. The City asks residents to please dispose of these products in the trash rather than the toilet. When cooking oil is disposed in the sewer system, it can clog pipes and eventually pollute local waterways. Please avoid disposing cooking oil in the kitchen sink. Allow it to cool and add it to household garbage.

For more information on the City of Summit sewer system, please contact the Department of Community Services at (908) 273-6404.
