The City of Summit Police Department is encouraging motorists in New Jersey to join a day-long, national effort on October 10, 2017 to increase awareness about safe driving behaviors and keep roadways fatality free for one entire day.
Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day is a national initiative, designed to unite the country in moving toward zero roadway fatalities by encouraging motorists to be extra vigilant. This includes an increased focus on obeying all traffic laws such as buckling seatbelts, driving the posted speed limit, avoiding distractions like texting and eating while driving, and always being sober behind the wheel.
Last year in the state of New Jersey, 542 individuals lost their lives in motor vehicle-related crashes. This is a decrease from 589 fatal accidents in 2012 and the lowest number of motor vehicle related deaths in the State since the 1940s.
“Shining the spotlight for one day can help to create a groundswell of support for good driving behaviors that can carry over throughout the year,” explains Summit Police Lt. David Richel. “It is our continuing goal to help stem the tide of tragedies that occur every day on New Jersey’s roadways.”
Richel continues: “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day not only raises awareness about the individual responsibility we have for our driving behaviors, but also engages drivers in making positive changes behind-the-wheel.”
