The City of Summit is announcing its 10th annual Earth Day Clean-Up will be held on Saturday, April 23 from 9 AM to noon, and Sunday, May 1 from 1 to 4 PM in locations throughout the municipality.
Last year, more than 180 volunteers of all ages helped to beautify parks and open spaces in Summit, collecting an estimated 1.15 tons of trash and debris. Volunteers also removed invasive plants and laid 12 yards of wood chips on trails.
“Each day, we can have a tremendous impact on the world around us,” explains Summit Mayor Nora Radest. “By joining with our friends and neighbors as part of the Earth Day Clean-Up, we decide that the difference we make will help to make Summit a better place to live, work and for us all to enjoy.”
Clean-Up efforts on April 23 will include portions of Wilson Park, Martin's Brook Park, and open spaces surrounding the Transfer Station near New Providence Avenue, Constantine Place and Risk Avenue. On May 1, the Clean-Up will be led by Summit GreenFaith Circle and focus on the Hidden Valley trail near Jefferson School.
To register a group for participation, please email summitearthday2016@gmail.com. Individuals and walk-ins are welcome at Briant Park and Martin's Brook on Saturday, April 23, between 9 AM and noon, and at Hidden Valley Park on Sunday, May 1, between 1 and 4 PM. Participants are asked to bring work gloves and a beverage in a reusable container. Community service hours are available.
In the event of heavy rain on Saturday, April 23, the Clean-Up will be held on Sunday, April 24; there is no rain date for the Clean-Up on Sunday, May 1. Cancellations due to weather will be posted on http://cityofsummit.org, if necessary.
