The Summit Police Department is announcing their 3rd Annual “Summit CommUNITY Cares” Food and Household Goods Collection. Chief Robert Weck, Summit PBA Local #55 and members of the Summit Police Department will be partnering with the non-profit organization Family Promise (Union County) and the Junior League of Summit. The two organizations will be the recipients of donated items to assist families in the coming summer months with food shortages.
Food insecurity is rampant in the United States. On average, one in seven people struggle to make ends meet right here in Union County. The Summit Police Department is continuing their efforts to overcome this struggle by partnering with the Summit Public Schools and local businesses that are directly linked to the families who are facing these challenges. Family Promise’s food pantry will be one recipient of the collected items to assist those that have recently fallen onto difficult times, or are getting themselves back on their feet. Collected items will also be donated to the Community Refrigerator (Junior League of Summit), a new program that provides groceries to an average of forty-seven Summit families a week.
The collection will be running from May 22 through June 12. Last year the Summit Police Department was able to provide a total of 750 pounds of food to these organizations. This year, there is a goal of 1,000 pounds of food to be collected. Collection bins will be housed at Summit City Hall, the Connection for Women & Families, the Summit Area YMCA, MONDO, the Junior League of Summit Thrift Shop, and all seven elementary and primary center schools and the Summit High School.
