The Summit Fire Department has implemented a new module of the HAAS Alert Safety Cloud® digital alerting service designed to prevent accidents between emergency vehicles.

The Summit Fire Department began implementing the R2V® Collision Prevention (responder-to-vehicle) system from HAAS Alert Safety Cloud® into all fire apparatus in January 2024. This technology delivers immediate warnings to New Jersey drivers when emergency vehicles are active in the vicinity. The system issues up to 30 seconds of preemptive warning on the Waze navigation app and Apple Maps, providing drivers with additional time to respond appropriately, such as decelerating or changing lanes. The service has been proven to significantly reduce collision risks by up to 90%, safeguarding both first responders and drivers.

The department recently implemented the R2R® Collision Prevention (responder-to-responder) service from the safety cloud system, which alerts the firefighter driving the vehicle when another emergency vehicle (that is equipped with any safety cloud system from HAAS Alert) is approaching. The lights on the alert system, which can be mounted to the windshield or dashboard of the fire vehicle, will illuminate, giving the driver a 10 to 15 second heads-up if they’re on a possible collision course with another unit.

“This new module provides another layer of important protection for our firefighters, whether they are responding to a call or simply navigating everyday traffic,” explains Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers. “This enhanced situational awareness will help us make effective decisions and take preventative actions when necessary, keeping our firefighters and other motorists safe on the road.”

The Summit Fire Department is the first fire department in the state to equip their apparatus with the R2R® Collision Prevention service.
