While members of Common Council always appreciate when citizens are able to attend our meetings, we understand that often our constituents are unable to do so.
Reports, Presentations and Proclamations
Mayor Radest gave an overview of the recently launched Uber partnership, an update on the Morris Avenue Bridge, an appeal for volunteers for upcoming appointments, and announced the Planning Board would be meeting to discuss the Master Plan 10/13. City Administrator Michael Rogers spoke of Summit’s storm preparedness program, the upcoming youth golf tournament at the Muni, the Screen on the Green and Halloween parade, the extended Parking Permit deadline of 10/15, beginning curbside leaf pick-up on 10/10 and the city acquiring a 15 person passenger van for seniors through Seniors in Motion. Council President McTernan introduced Elena Turner who spoke about the role Summit played in the Revolutionary War.
Mayor Radest made two proclamations: One for Family Promise Week and the other for Fire Prevention Week.
Kevin Taylor of TryCAN was honored with the Dr. Jaquie Stanley Distinguished Administrator Award and the TryCAN program was awarded the Distinguished Non-Profit Recreation Agency Award by the NJ Commission for Recreation for Persons with Disabilities.
Public Comments
Denise Miles spoke of the hardship of the rerouting of NJ Bus line due to the Morris Avenue Bridge closure and Lawrence Everling raised concerns about the funding and costs of the Summit Parkline. Three residents voiced concerns about the state of the building site for the Providence Crossing project on the corner of Passaic and Springfield.
Ordinances
Three Ordinances had hearings and were approved. The first was to establish a mid-block crosswalk on Springfield Ave down at the Park & Ride. The following two introduced ordinances limited parking to 2 hours on William Street and on Cromwell Parkway, Blair Place, Nassau Drive, and Dorset Lane respectively. One resident ask for further measures to be researched before enacting the Williams Street ordinance while two residents came forward supporting it.
Resolutions
Twenty resolutions were passed unanimously at this week’s Council Meeting. Highlights include Council approving a settlement with Fair Share Housing outlining for the court Summit’s Affordable Housing Plan for the next 10 years. The resolution was supported by resident Vito Gallo as well as Reverends Steele and Harrield of the Inter-Faith Council. Also approved was a shared service agreement with New Providence on sewer oversight, awarding of a bid for the Colt Road improvement project, and decorative lighting for the Promenade. The council also rejected a homeowner on Prospect Hill’s request to not put a sidewalk back on his property after construction of a new home.
