Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Essay by Alexandra Hasse

Many of my fondest memories from my childhood involve watching movies under the stars and enjoying concerts on The Green with my family. Our routine consisted of grabbing our blankets and folding chairs, packing a bag of snacks to feast on, and parking in the library lot before crossing over to stake out our seats. Every summer, Summit holds outdoor movie nights and live concerts on The Green, a tradition that brings people of all ages together. These simple but nostalgic experiences have shaped my sense of community, creativity, and appreciation for the arts.

"Screen on The Green" was an event I always eagerly anticipated. As the sun would set and the inflatable screen would light up, families and friends would cozy up on blankets sharing snacks. A variety of local businesses lined the perimeter, offering games and prizes as entertainment while vendors sold food and kids lined up for free ice cream. In hindsight, these nights weren't just about the movies; they were about the connections created in these unassuming moments. Films have the power to bring people together, no matter our backgrounds or differences, and Summit uses this to draw our community closer together. It was these organized movie nights that made me realize the privilege I have to live in a city that supports its community and strives to unite us, whether through the arts, athletic events, or educational opportunities.

The energy's infectious; people dance in the grass, clap from their chairs, and sway along, creating an atmosphere of pure joy. These concerts reflect not only the importance of supporting musicians, but also how vital art is for society. I came to understand that these events were not just entertainment; they were a celebration of who we were as a town and a reminder of the joy created from coming together as a community.

Beyond the fun and entertainment, these events have played a role in shaping my sense of belonging and connection here in Summit. As a teenager now, often if someone brings up town events, others will chime in and reminisce fondly on memories created. These community gatherings, produced by the City of Summit, have given generations of residents a shared identity. Every experience, whether a float night at the pool, live music, or a visit to one of our many public parks has transformed Summit from somewhere I live, to my home. The Green serves as a gathering place to bond, share, and learn from each other. It's here that I fell in love with live music and film, but more than that, it's where I experienced firsthand the connections that art and culture can build when they get the chance to thrive.
