Revolutionary War Sites in Summit
A plaque located at 226 Hobart Ave marks the location of a cannon called the "Old Sow" and a signal beacon that were used to alert local militia to action during times of attack and danger during the Revolutionary War, most notably during two important battles which occurred in this area in June 1780, the Battle of Connecticut Farms and the Battle of Springfield.
The beacon and cannon were placed in this spot because of its location on a hill within the Watchung Mountains and could be seen from a distance. Several other beacons were constructed and placed in locations throughout Central Jersey along the Watchung Mountains in Morristown, Long Hill, and Bound Brook.
