The Summit Police Department announces the arrest of 26-year-old Alquan Harris of East Orange in connection with an armed home invasion that occurred on February 21, 2025. The arrest follows a comprehensive and multi-agency investigation that spanned several months and multiple jurisdictions.
The suspect, later identified as Harris, unlawfully entered a residence and committed multiple felonies, including burglary and theft of a 2025 Infiniti QX80, while armed. During the incident, Harris did not interact with the residents and no injuries were reported; however, the event left a significant impact on the affected family and community.
After an extensive investigation involving surveillance analysis, forensic evidence, and intelligence-sharing, Harris was taken into custody. He now faces a total of 12 charges, including:
- 2C: 18-2.1 - 1st Degree Home Invasion Burglary
- 2C: 18-2A(1) - 2nd Degree Burglary to Auto While Armed
- 2C: 20-10.1A - 2nd Degree Theft of a Motor Vehicle
- 2C: 39-5B(1) - 2nd Degree Possession of a Weapon
- 2C: 39-4A(1) – 2nd Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose
- 2C: 39-7B(1) - 2nd Degree Certain Persons not to have Weapons
- 2C: 20-10.2A - 3rd Degree Receiving a Stolen Vehicle
- 2C: 20-3A - 3rd Degree Theft by Unlawful Taking
- 2C: 18-2A(1) - 3rd Degree Burglary
- 2C: 39-7A - 4th Degree Certain Persons not to have Weapons
- 2C: 20-3A - Disorderly Persons - Theft under $200
Chief Ryan Peters credited the arrest to the tireless efforts of the Summit Police Detective Bureau, as well as collaboration with regional partners.
“This case is a testament to the determination and professionalism of our officers and investigators,” said Chief Peters. “We are especially grateful for the coordinated support from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and other assisting agencies whose partnership made this arrest possible.”
Harris is currently being held in Essex County Jail pending a detention hearing. The investigation remains active, and further charges may be forthcoming.
