Summit Mayor Elizabeth Fagan, MD, is proud to announce a new Mayors Wellness Campaign, a local effort that is part of a statewide initiative to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being across all demographics. The mission of the campaign is to help foster a healthier, more vibrant Summit by empowering residents of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to participate in activities that enhance their well-being.
“Our goal is to create a supportive and inclusive environment that not only encourages active participation in wellness initiatives but also specifically promotes increased physical activity among our residents," stated Mayor Fagan. "We are dedicated to integrating wellness as an accessible and fun part of daily life for everyone in Summit.”
Under Mayor Fagan's leadership, the campaign will emphasize a comprehensive approach to community engagement that includes the formation of a dedicated committee of health and wellness professionals. Founding members include Chris Bonner, Executive Director of the Connection; Laura Geron, Project Manager of Quality & Patient Safety at Atlantic Health System; Susan Kaye, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Family Medicine at Overlook Medical Center; Paul Kieltyka, President & CEO of the Summit Area YMCA; Robert Rubino, Physician; Carol Vargas, Vice President of Integrated Health Care at Atlantic Health System; and Ann Zanelli, Nurse with the Summit Board of Education.
During the campaign, committee work will focus on bridging gaps in health equity, ensuring that programs are accessible, culturally sensitive, and tailored to meet the diverse needs of the community. Recognizing the importance of community involvement, the Mayors Wellness Campaign will foster partnerships across various sectors, including local businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and other community organizations. These partnerships will broaden the scope and impact of the campaign, establishing it as a fundamental element for community growth.
Residents are encouraged to visit the newly launched Mayors Wellness Campaign webpage for information on how to get involved, upcoming programs, and resources available to the community. The city has also introduced a staff-led initiative to promote wellness within municipal operations, serving as a model for incorporating health-conscious practices in professional settings.
