The Summit Department of Community Programs is hosting two events for TryCAN community members and prospective mentors during the annual MLK Day of Service in Summit on Monday, January 15, 2024.
TryCAN kids and family members are invited to a movie event from 3:30PM to 5:30PM on Monday, January 15, in the Guida Gym at the Summit Community Center located at 100 Morris Avenue. Pizza and hot chocolate will be served during a dance party held before the movie, Elemental. Seating will be provided but attendees may bring blankets, pillows, or a sleeping bag. There will be a quiet area with activities for individuals needing a break during the movie. Attendance is free to all TryCAN families, but pre-registration via CivicRec is required. The Department of Community Programs is also hosting a TryCAN mentor training session from 1PM to 3PM on Monday, January 15, in the Benson Room at the Summit Community Center. Peer mentors assist TryCAN program participants at events throughout the year and are a critical component to the success of the TryCAN program. Mentors will gain volunteer experience and broaden their understanding of developmental disabilities. Registration is required and can be completed online through CivicRec or via phone at 908-277-2932. There is a $10 registration fee.
