IMPORTANT HEALTH ADVISORY: RABID FOX ALERT

Dear Summit Residents,

On Monday, a fox was put down by the Summit Police Department. Subsequent tests have confirmed that the fox was positive for rabies.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans and animals through bites, scratches, or open wounds that come into contact with the saliva of an infected animal.

URGENT ACTION REQUIRED:

At this point, it is believed that this is the fox that initiated all three attacks.

If you, a family member, or your pets had any contact with this fox or any other wildlife that appeared sick or behaved strangely, it is crucial that you immediately contact the Westfield Regional Health Department at 908-789-4070.

It is recommended that residents avoid any contact with wildlife, especially those that seem disoriented or act unusually. Always ensure that rabies vaccinations for pets are up to date.

We thank you for your immediate attention to this matter.
