The City of Summit is sharing information from New Jersey American Water (NJAW) on the Lead Service Line Replacement Program and how customers can assist NJAW by identifying the material of their water service line.
In 2021, the state of New Jersey enacted a law that requires all water providers to share with customers the material of the utility-owned and customer-owned service lines that lead to their property, notify customers with service lines that are made of lead or galvanized steel, and replace them by 2031. As part of its Lead Service Replacement Program, NJAW will be replacing all lead and galvanized steel service lines, including the customer-owned portion at no direct cost to customers.
NJAW is requesting assistance from customers to identify the material of their service line; some customers may have already been notified by mail. Customers can use this map to see if the customer-owned portion material is unknown, follow these steps to determine the material, and report it to NJAW.
It is important to note that if service lines contain lead, it does not mean water should not be consumed as usual. NJAW customers’ water continues to meet water quality standards. NJAW’s ongoing lead and copper compliance testing continues to meet state and federal water quality regulations.
